It started off like any other day, I was driving to work and suddenly I saw a flashing red light in my rear view mirror, no siren, just a flashing red light, with the police car following my vehicle at a very close range.
I pulled over to the right and fumbled for my driver's license, registration papers and my insurance papers thinking that my insurance company was already gouging myself and others and that I may have inadvertently provided them with another excuse to raise my premiums. The insurance companies only care about convictions and fines/demerit points are irrevelant to that calculation, as my insurance broker had told me a numbe of years ago.
The police officer slowly walked to my window and when he arrived he had a huge "I got you" smile.
He asked me what kind of a day I was having and I was tempted to say "Great, before I saw you", but instead I said "Fine, how about you"? He said that I was speeding, 16 over and that he "had to issue me with a ticket" and asked for my licence, insurance and ownership papers. I provided him with the documents and he took the documents back to his cruiser and after what felt like an hour (only about 8 minutes) he came back and returned my documents and presented me with a ticket for speeding.
He said "if you fight it, you'll probably have it reduced and there won''t be any points" and after this cheerful exchange, he walked back to his cruiser and drove away.
I couldn't afford another conviction for speeding and I turned the ticket over and saw what my options were. Two day later I went to the Court to file for a trial and I overheard another guy in line who had won his last ticket. He said that he spoke to a number of paralegals and they all wanted between 3 to 4 hundred dollars, which, like myself, he could not afford. He said he went into a website and used the tips and won his ticket. I asked him where this was advertised. He said he met a guy in a coffee shop, a tow truck driver, who said that there was a new website, which offered free advice. He said that because it is new, you can't google it and that you have to go to your address bar at the top of the page and type in "fightyourtickets.ca". I didn't buy what this guy told me, but I wrote it down on the inside of my cigarette pack and filed my ticket for a trial.
When I got my date in the mail, I got my cigarette pack and I went to this website and the tow truck driver was right, it is awesome and it is free. I was able to ask for "disclosure" (the officer's notes) and when it didn't arrive, the Crown dopped the charge. No conviction, no more $ for insurance.
There are good people out there, its just so seldom we bump into them.
Thanks, John
